LOVE YOUR CURL

Updated: Aug 25, 2021

A big trend in hair we are loving is allowing your natural wave and movement to work with your hair cut and style. Curly girls are embracing their curls and wearing their hair wild and full and we are seeing the return of layers to encourage movement and texture.

There is a fine line between untameable frizz and a great hair day, so how do YOU care for curls and have them looking fabulous?

Read on and we'll have your curls looking defined, bouncy and frizz free.

ITS ALL ABOUT HYDRATION

Generally curly hair is prone to becoming dry, which effects the elasticity and ability for the curls to form. For bouncy, healthy looking curls you need moisture.

Leave in moisturisers and conditioners are essential for curls.

DON'T SHAMPOO TOO OFTEN

It is also important not to shampoo your hair too often. You don't want to strip the natural oils and moisture. Using shampoo 1-3 times a week depending on your hair and curl type is our recommendation. In between shampoo's if you feel you need to wet your hair or re-form your curls just use conditioner or a product like restore which is a repairing cleansing treatment.

After shampooing scrunch a moisturising conditioner through the mid length and ends of your hair. Use a conditioner/treatment/rinse that is free of silicones. Most silicones build up in the hair causing it to become limp and greasy. Make sure the hair is fully saturated with conditioner you want the ends to feel slimy. Detangle with your fingers or a wide tooth comb then rinse and apply your leave in moisturiser.

If you hair is course, very dry or damaged you may need a repair treatment or mask for extra repair and elasticity.

ADD YOUR STYLING PRODUCTS BEFORE YOU REMOVE EXCESS WATER

While you hair is still sopping wet, rake and scrunch a generous amount of your curl enhancing product through your roots to tips. This will help to trap the water in the hair as well as encourage curl formation and not encourage frizz.

The product you use will be different for different types of curls. Some curls respond to a cream product while others bounce up better with a gel or mousse. You may even need to layer products. Its at this stage you form and style your curls

DON'T TOWEL DRY YOUR HAIR

Towels rough up your hair cuticle and lead to frizz and tangles. Instead gently cup squeeze out the excess water with a cotton t-shirt or a microfibre towel or plop it gently in a hair turban. You need to make sure you are pushing the curls into themselves.

You then need to air dry or diffuse your hair on low, resist the temptation to touch your hair as this will disturb the curl pattern and cause frizz and straighter bits.

Once it is 100% dry, gently scrunch your hair with your hands to get rid of the product coating. If you need extra volume use you finger tips at the roots to break up the curl.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR WHILE YOU SLEEP

Try wrapping you hair in a silk scarf or sleeping on a silk pillowcase, this will reduce the friction and preserve your curl pattern.

GET REGULAR TRIMS

Dry, brittle split ends don't curl they frizz so its important to make sure you trim them regularly, We would recommend every 6 to 8 weeks.

Love your curls, If treated properly, curly hair can look healthy, shiny, and defined.
